what is this?

Photo 131

we took the cat for a stroll late last night and came across this magical garden where we picked this off some vine or something. i don't know it was all a blur and quite a strange place. i guess we were trespassing and stealing but it just didn't feel like that at the time. ha ha. so anyone know? can we eat this? what is it?

I think it's ... bitter melon?

that's what people are telling me. i'm not thrilled about eating something with "bitter" in the name...

In Japan, specifically Okinawa, it is a mascot called "Goyaman". "Goya" meaning "bitter melon" and "man" meaning, well, man.

I wouldn't eat it, but would put a yellow safety hat and cape on it like the Japanese. (http://www014.upp.so-net.ne.jp/okinawa_life/image/go-ya-man.gif)
